This is a response to harmless environmental antigens due to a pre-existing antibody. The most common mechanism is the binding of the antigen or allergen to IgE antibody on mast cells causing asthma, hay fever, eczema and other common reactions. It is acquired and is classified as a type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity reaction.« Back to Glossary Index
